Vision impairment.

I'm sure there's a lot of us want to help a vision impaired person, yet we are lack of the confidence to do so... ...
I met 2 very impressive clients from my workplace, I got this brochure & think it will be very useful and important to SHARE.
The brochure has pictorial illustration.
But i don't have a scanner, so it will be a little dry with words only.

Helping person with vision impairment

Identify yourself
When offering your assistance to a person with vision impairment, let him or her know who you are & then ASK if they need assistance.
If he or she does not need your help, do not feel offended. Respect their independence.

When help is accepted...
Do not pull them by the white cane. Guide the person to grip your arm.

Give clear & precise directions
Use the person with vision impairment as a reference point when giving directions.
" On your right, 5 steps ahead is the traffic light."
Give clear instructions when approaching objects, doors, stairs etc.
"We are approaching a flight of stairs, 4 steps ahead."

At the bus-stop...
Offer to read the approaching bus numbers.
"Bus number 65 is approaching"
When boarding, place the person's free hand on the grab rail. On the bus, guide them to an available seat. Preferably near the bus captain.
"Here's the grab rail"

Getting off the bus...
Let the bus captian know the destination of the vision impaired person.
"My friend is getting off 3 stops from here"

Waiting & boarding the MRT...
Help the vision impaired person to the correct side of the platform to board the train, keeping the person at a safe distance behind the yellow lines until the train arrives, then guide the person to board the train safely.
"Let's board the north-bound train"

Getting around in a taxi
Offer to hail a taxi for the person with vision impairment. Place the hand of the vision impaired person on the car door so that they will know where the door is. Let them open the door and get in by themselves at their pace.

Leaving
DO NOT leave the person you are guiding standing alone in an open space, especially bus stops and public roads.
inform them of your intention to leave and if others are present, request someone to take your place.
"I am leaving now. You are now on Orchard road with shopping centre on your left. Goodbye"

Remember:
Always inform the vision impaired person when you are leaving!

From Great World City to Clarke Quay, I love wandering even though afternoon was scorching hot.
I'm happy with the details captured in the photographs.

I took a bus from Clarke Quay to SAM.

"Japan Media ArtsFest" @ 8Q SAM.
Figurines, Japanese anime, Manga, Games.

But I prefer SAM's latest exhibitions:
"KoreanArt" & "Heartlands- Home and Nation in the Art of Ong Kim Seng".

KoreanArt: Classical paintings on LCD Monitor. Intrigued with the changes in the painting: Daylight, sunset, nighttime to winter.
Heartlands: History, Poetry, sketches and watercolour painting. Transformation of attap houses to development of HDB flats in Singapore.

So tempting, the kids were havin' so much fun @ the pool. I couldn't resist it & joined them for Jacuzzi! Right, here's the joke of the day. With the help of Germ, we managed to forcefully pull the stretchable boot cut jeans to knee length. So I took pictures with the kids... & here's the consequence:
I couldn't change into my Bermudas cos the jean got stuck @ my fat leg. LOL! Look! five of them helped to pull it bk to the normal length! Image is a little shaky cos the person who took this was laughing so hard.

There's quite a number of ex-colleagues who attended the BBQ, didn't post their pic on my blog, cos I don't if they like it or not & i'm too lazy to ask them for permission...
Swimming, playground, BBQ, majong session for some, chit chat in the kitchen... still so family-oriented.
